Crafted from the Tepeztate Agave marmorata, which requires an extended maturation period of 25 years, this mezcal reflects the mastery of Pedro Vásquez Ogarrio, the master mezcalero at Tío Pedro distillery in Sta. María Zoquitlán.
With an impressive 48% alcohol by volume, the Tepeztate agave is known for its wild and challenging growth, often taking 25-35 years to mature fully.
Found hanging horizontally from mountain cliffs, harvesting is a difficult endeavor. Recognizing the species' increasing rarity and potential for endangerment, El Jolgorio’s producers are exploring the cultivation of Tepeztate seedlings in a nursery for subsequent re-planting in the wild, marking a semi-cultivated approach. The resulting mezcal boasts a nose characterized by complete herbal freshness, a taste highlighted by notes of mint and spearmint, and a strong and elegantly intense finish with a lingering herbal note.
This Tepeztate mezcal is a testament to the wild nature of the agave, offering a vegetal, herbal, and earthy profile that captures the essence of this unique and challenging variety.
