Orgeat, pronounced "or-zhat," is a traditional French almond syrup, with its origins traced back to a barley-based recipe, initially serving as a long-lasting milk substitute. This syrup has counterparts across the globe, such as Valencian orxata, Dutch orgeade, and Mexican horchata. Our rendition is crafted using California almonds and a hint of apricot kernels, imparting a unique "marzipan" essence without relying on artificial extracts. The addition of organic cane sugar, fragrant orange flower water, and biodynamic California brandy creates a syrup that's not only rich and full-bodied but also subtly perfumed with floral notes. Orgeat is a crucial component in the iconic Mai Tai, concocted in 1944 at Trader Vic’s in Oakland, and is also featured in the Japanese Cocktail and various absinthe-based drinks. Small Hand Foods, established in 2008 by Jennifer Colliau, marks its origin as the pioneering craft cocktail syrup company. Jennifer, while serving at The Slanted Door in San Francisco, sought to recreate a traditional Mai Tai using authentic Orgeat syrup made with real almonds, reminiscent of the pre-Prohibition era. After extensive experimentation, she perfected an Orgeat recipe that closely mirrored 1800s formulations. Expanding her repertoire, Jennifer introduced additional syrups including Gum Syrup, Pineapple Gum, Raspberry Gum, and Grenadine, and began supplying these artisanal products to bars and restaurants across the country.
