Tosba Tepextate Mezcal, a unique variety of mezcal, is crafted using the Agave marmorata, also known as Tepextate. This agave variety matures over a lengthy period of approximately 20-25 years in the wild, growing in challenging conditions on steep slopes and rocky soils. This extended growth period contributes to the higher price of Tepextate mezcal compared to more common varieties like Espadin.
The mezcal is known for its distinct flavor profile that is significantly deeper and offers more complexity than other mezcals. It is characterized by fresh and herbal notes along with rich and robust spicy flavors, incorporating elements of minerals. This complexity is attributed to the agave's long maturation period and the challenging growing conditions.
Tosba Tepextate Mezcal, made in San Cristóbal Lachirioag, Oaxaca, is a product of wild-harvested Tepextate grown in the nutrient-rich soil of the Sierra Juarez Mountains. The mezcal's tasting notes include a blend of vegetal and earthy flavors, with hints of bell peppers, sweet leafy greens, roasted vegetables, tart pineapple, and clementine. Its finish is notable for its long and powerful impact, with a burst of fresh rain, citrus, and dry Chardonnay, accompanied by vegetal flavors like asparagus, broccoli, cucumber, rosemary, and basil.
The sustainability of this agave variety is a growing concern due to its long maturation period and the increasing demand for Tepextate mezcal. Overharvesting could potentially lead to its extinction, emphasizing the importance of sustainable harvesting practices and exploring cultivation methods to supplement wild populations
